4 Free Resources to Learn Programming and AI If You're a Student

Learning technology no longer depends on paying for an expensive course: some of the world's best universities and companies offer free material, and in Ecuador there are events open to students. This is a selection of four resources, verified on their official sites, to start or advance in programming and artificial intelligence.
1. Harvard's CS50: the gateway to programming
CS50 is Harvard University's introduction to computer science, and you can take it for free through its OpenCourseWare, according to its official site. Besides the general course (CS50x), there are versions on Python, AI, web development, SQL and cybersecurity, among others. A verified certificate is paid, through edX.
2. Elements of AI: understand AI without being an expert
Elements of AI is a series of free online courses created by the University of Helsinki and MinnaLearn for people without a technical background, with a Spanish version. It explains what AI is, what it can do and its limits — useful whatever you study.
3. GitHub Student Developer Pack: professional tools for free
The GitHub Student Developer Pack is free for verified students and includes, among other things, GitHub Pro, GitHub Copilot Student (AI code suggestions), access to Microsoft Azure services with USD 100 in credits and JetBrains IDEs, according to its official page. It is the way to practice with the same tools professional teams use.
4. TICEC 2026: a technology event in Ecuador
From October 15 to 16, with a welcome cocktail on the 14th, TICEC 2026 takes place: the 14th Ecuadorian Conference on Information and Communication Technologies, organized with CEDIA. It is hosted by Universidad Indoamérica in Ambato and brings together researchers, students and professionals around AI, cybersecurity and digital transformation. Registration is on its official site.
A simple plan to get started
- Weeks 1-2: Elements of AI, to understand the landscape.
- Months 1-3: CS50x or CS50 Python, at your own pace.
- Meanwhile: activate the Student Developer Pack and publish what you build on GitHub; a portfolio is worth more than a list of courses.
- In October: go to TICEC to meet people in the field.
